Return on Compliance and Compliance Effectiveness

16 April 2026

During the last 2 years professors at the University of Lucerne and university of applied science of Grisons together have researched what factors makes compliance successful and contribute to company success. Besides literature research there have been also numerous workshops where Ethics & Compliance Switzerland participated and contributed. These factors and empirical research that compliance adds value for organizations have been published in magazines and can be bought here.

Unfortunately, compliance is still widely perceived as a cost center, despite evidence from our previous research showing a statistically significant link between effective and efficient compliance and corporate success.

While existing metrics of compliance departments focus often on activities and inputs, there remains a lack of outcome- and impact-oriented indicators that assess whether compliance actually contributes to organizational success. The goal of a follow-up project is to close this gap by identifying and validating success-oriented, decision-relevant Compliance KPIs (CKPIs) and embedding them in an AI-assisted, real-time monitoring dashboard.

In a recent workshop conducted by ECS in Switzerland, we stress-tested potential indicators with compliance practitioners. During the months of May and June 2026 more input will be obtained from compliance practitioners through Ethics & Compliance Switzerland. Then in Q1 2027 the first dashboard concept will be available."
